Unbelievable!

It’s almost the perfect story for little children: nothing more scary than a dazzling angel (if you leave out Herod’s rage) and nothing more upsetting than finding, after a long journey while heavily pregnant, that the inn has no record of the booking (leaving aside the barbarism of Herod’s soldiers).  Then there’s cute animals, a cute baby and majestic kings riding exotic camels carrying expensive gifts.

But when little children grow up they start thinking like us adults and that means they have problems with the story, especially with angel messengers, a pregnant virgin, and a star that can stop over a house without incinerating our whole planet.  These things are problems for them because we teach our children that we live in a closed universe full of wonders but with nothing outside it, and so we close their minds to anything beyond; there can’t be any answers that don’t begin and end here.

But the Bible writers began with a different assumption – that there is a creation and a Creator.  Their minds were open to the possibility that this Creator could do things differently from usual.  Creatures who are not part of our material world could appear here if he wanted them to, human life could begin without a human father, and a dazzling object in earth’s atmosphere could function as star-nav.  The Creator is not limited by our closed minds.  If there might be both a creation and a Creator then perhaps Xmas is more believable than you thought?

And if this world’s exquisite beauty and intricacy tells us something about the wisdom and purposefulness of our Creator then perhaps the bizarre events of the first Century were actually  part of a carefully planned rescue mission, the answer to our deepest needs.   Perhaps Christmas is a whole lot better than you thought?

Debt Free

November 2022

Dear Friends

“Owe no-one anything” says the Apostle Paul.  He cannot mean it is always wrong to borrow because Jesus says not to “turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you”, but he is saying it is good to pay what you owe.  We know how we feel when someone fails to repay what we lent them, but we also know that anyone can get caught in a debt trap – illness, redundancy, divorce, inflation and a thousand other things can suddenly leave us unable to pay what we’ve promised.  God commanded the nation of Israel to have compassion for the debtor while making it possible for them to repay what they owe.  If the economic predictions are right we are going to need lots of that wisdom in the months ahead.

A number of churches in this area, including our village churches, have provided the resources for a CAP Debt Centre in Kendal: www.kendaldebtcentre.org   This is up and running and providing free help for people in Kendal.  We now want to find a way to offer the same help here in our villages because it is not just needed in our big towns.  The Debt Centre do not give money; they give compassionate and practical long-term support, handling all the communications with banks and other lenders, while their clients gradually set themselves free from debt. 

“The borrower is the slave of the lender” says the Bible.  That’s very true, we are not free when we owe money.  It’s always best not to get into debt with anyone, and it’s good when people become debt free.  Our government recently discovered how little freedom they had to do what they thought was right while our nation still owes so much - £2.4 trillion at the last count of national debt, or £35,000 for every man, woman and child.  We are slaves to the lenders.

One more Bible comment about a mountain of a different kind of debt that we owe God because of our disregard of his laws.  We cannot clear this but God has himself paid the price to cancel “the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.  This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”  That’s true and glorious debt freedom.  Apply now!

The King's Call

Dear Friends

A queue snakes across the wide pavement as people wait patiently to enter Westminster Abbey, but they have not come for a royal funeral.  The old grainy photograph shows large numbers on Sunday 26 May 1940 answering the call of King George VI for a National Day of Prayer.  People filled churches across the nation because hundreds of thousands of retreating British troops trapped on the French coast at Dunkirk desperately needed to be evacuated before the advancing German forces overwhelmed them.  Winston Churchill would later call the rescue of 338,000 soldiers ‘the miracle of Dunkirk’ and a Day of National Thanksgiving was called on Sunday 9 June.

There were several such days of prayer in our country during both world wars (and in times of trouble before then) called by kings and prime ministers who believed that we must repent of behaviour that falls short of God’s good commands, that God had the power to deliver our nation, and that we had much to thank God for.  The calls were heeded by a nation that believed the same things.  And we have recently been very forcefully reminded that Queen Elizabeth shared the same convictions and lived by them right through into the Twenty-First Century.

I can’t call the nation to pray but I can appeal to you to consider the huge challenges we face: in our national debt, health service, schools and politics; with war in Ukraine, rising fuel and food prices and uncertain energy supply; overwhelmed by family breakdowns and our mental health crisis; having lost so much of our moral compass and our hope for the future.  Do you think we have the answer to any of these problems?

I will not be asking you to pray out loud or to sing.  I will lead in some prayers, and there will be time for silent thoughts and prayer.  That’s all.  Do come.

Setting their path

Dear Friends

“I don’t want to tell my children what to believe; I want them to make up their own minds when they are older!”

Many parents give this as the reason why they don’t teach their children to pray, talk to them about Jesus, take them to church or have them baptised (aka christened).  You are not sure if it is right to put words into their mouths or ideas into their heads.

But the truth is that parents cannot avoid influencing and teaching their children and setting the direction for their life.  That is how God has created families.  The only question is, which path will you set them on?  You will either teach them to follow Jesus or you will teach them (by your example if not by words) to follow someone or something else.  You will either teach them to pray to their heavenly Father for all they need, or they will learn from you that they should seek help elsewhere.  You will either mark them as belonging to Jesus, or some other god will claim them as his own.

Of course I understand that you may not believe that the Christian faith is true, although I would love to persuade you otherwise.  But if you do believe that Jesus is God’s Son and that he spoke the truth then I encourage you to think how you will nurture those same certainties in your children.  You could read a children’s Bible with them or pray with them.  If they are a little older you could read the Narnia Chronicles to them too.  Could you find another family who are thinking the same way and agree together to be bold pioneers in bringing children back into our churches?  We would love to welcome you.

And if you are Year 6 or above, you might want to check out the truth of Christian faith for yourself.  Our CY group will run on Thursdays at 4.15pm starting on 22^nd Sep.  It will be a chance to hear the historic Christian message clearly explained, to ask questions and to think for yourself.  And for those who are interested there will be the opportunity to go on to prepare for Confirmation – a public declaration of faith in Jesus.  Please let me know (text, email or phone) if you are interested.

Firming Up

Dear Friends

Confirmation.  It’s not in the Bible but it is a rite that has been practised by churches for centuries.  During a special service of Confirmation the bishop prays for each candidate in turn, that the Lord would confirm them in their faith in Jesus Christ by the good gift of his Holy Spirit to them.  And each candidate confirms that they have turned away from their sin, that they are trusting in the Lord Jesus for forgiveness and they are following him as one of his disciples.  A certificate is issued and names are entered into the register in the church.

Some were baptised/Christened as children, and this is the natural progression – they are confirmed and begin to play their part as young adults in the church.  Other young people have not been pointed in that direction but might still like an opportunity to hear more about Jesus and to think for themselves whether they intend to follow him in life or not.

From September we plan to begin a group that meets in Burton after school at 4.15pm (probably on Thursdays) for anyone in school year 6 and above.  Over the course of several weeks we will go over what Christians have historically believed and give lots of opportunities for questions and discussion.  Then, those who might want to find out more, and those who are thinking they would like to be confirmed at some point, will have the opportunity of continuing to meet to prepare themselves.  No-one who comes to the group will have to be confirmed if they decide not to proceed.  Anyone can join the group – those who have never been baptised/Christened can be baptised at their Confirmation service if they choose to go ahead.

And if Thursday at 4.15pm is no good, or if you are much older than Year 6 but you would still like to talk about confirmation or baptism – I would be delighted to hear from you too.  Many adults have never been baptised or confirmed so I think it will be quite common now to see people of all ages who want to declare their faith in Jesus Christ in these ways.

Our Servant Queen

Dear Friends

On 6^th February this year Queen Elizabeth II became the first-ever British monarch to have reigned for 70 years.  The Jubilee weekend will be a focus of our thanksgiving for her Majesty’s long reign marked by humble and dedicated service.

At her coronation in Westminster Abbey in 1953 the Queen was presented with several items that are so valuable that they are normally kept behind two-inch-thick bullet-proof glass in the Tower of London.

She received a beautiful gold six-inch sphere with a jewelled cross on the top.   The Archbishop presented it with these words, “Receive this Orb set under the Cross, and remember that the whole world is subject to the Power and Empire of Christ our Redeemer.”

She was handed a sceptre with a diamond-encrusted cross, as a symbol of the authority to rule that God was entrusting to her (Romans 13:1).

She was given a sword, because rulers are charged by God with the punishment of wrong-doers (Romans 13:4).

And our Queen was given a crown topped by a cross because (as the Queen said herself in her 2011 Christmas Day broadcast), “Although we are capable of great acts of kindness, history teaches us that we sometimes need saving from ourselves – from our recklessness and greed.  God sent into the world a unique person – neither a philosopher nor a general (important though they are) – but a Saviour, with the power to forgive.”

Alongside these costly objects the Queen was also given a book with these words, “We present you with this Book, the most valuable thing that this world affords.”  What book could be more valuable than the Crown Jewels?  Only one.  A Bible.

In a foreword to a book to mark her 90^th birthday her Majesty wrote, “In 1952 I asked the people … to pray for me as I prepared to dedicate myself to their service at my Coronation.   I have been – and remain – very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for His steadfast love.  I have indeed seen His faithfulness.” 

And here is the request that Princess Elizabeth made before her Coronation: “Pray that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.”

Mothballed?

Dear Friends

I am just old enough to remember the deployment of ‘Green Goddesses’, fire engines from the 1950s brought out of retirement and driven by soldiers in 1977 while regular fire brigades were on strike.

Some people think of Jesus in a similar way.  40 days after his resurrection he was withdrawn from active service on this planet and returned to base.  There he waits, still, for the day when our world is in such need that he will be brought out of retirement and will return to sort things out. 

But ‘retired’ (and bored or restless?) is not at all how the Bible speaks of Jesus’ life now.  Yes, he sits at the Father’s right hand because his great battle on the cross is over and his triumph is complete.  But his seat is not a deckchair or a recliner; it’s a throne from which he directs the course of world history.  When Jesus ascended it was to the place of all power and authority over heaven and earth (Philippians 2:9).  Jesus sustains everything in this universe by his powerful word (Hebrews 1:3).  He has sent out his heralds to ‘make disciples of all nations’ (Matthew 28:19) by announcing that he is graciously willing to offer peace and forgiveness now (Acts 2:38) before he returns ‘to judge the living and the dead’.

I think some Christians prefer the idea of Jesus in passive retirement because they can then avoid difficult questions about the terrible suffering in the world on his watch.  Jesus is, they think, a loving and sympathetic grandfather figure who can only wish that the world was a happier place.

But what if the Bible is right and Jesus is God and Lord?  Then we will have to re-think our ideas about everything: what our lives are for, where the world is heading, and what is the good, loving and just way to rule the world, because the Lord Jesus clearly thinks very differently from us about how to do the job.
